It all began in the mid 90’s when Bob received a home-brew kit for father’s day. Bob had caught the “brewer bug” and the dream of one day brewing on a larger scale began. It wasn’t long before Bob started entering & winning regional home-brewer’s awards and later went on to win national awards, including 9 ribbons for various styles and a gold medal for an authentic German Rauchbier. Receiving encouragement from family & friends, Bob and his son in-law PJ set out to make the dream a reality. Together Bob & PJ co-found Navigation Brewing Co. After a lengthy two years of searching, planning and waiting, Navigation Brewing Co. came to fruition. Bob & PJ began brewing small 1.5bbl batches of handcrafted ales in a 1100 sq.ft. industrial space in Lowell, MA.
Navigation Brewing Co. accomplished so much and exceeded our expectations thanks to the huge support received from family, friends, the community and most of all our customers. Its never easy, juggling family life, real jobs (which we continue to keep), brewing new batches, attending events, and growing a business. But it’s a labor of love thing and we wouldn’t change it for anything. During the summer of 2014 the Navigation Team began filling growlers, growing local tap accounts and retail accounts around the Merrimack Valley. During this time a few upgrades were made in the fermenting room with the purchase of 3 new 3bbl fermenters. In January of 2015 the search for a new home began and by late October we began building our new brewery located at Western Ave Studios in Lowell, MA. The new location facilitated our plans to expand the operation and build a new taproom. The brewery is now back in operation pushing out as much beer as we can. The taproom is scheduled to open in the spring of 2016. To be continued….
Bob Johnson, Head Brewer/CEO
Bob loves brewing. He spends a great deal of time researching and constructing new recipes as well as redefining and resurrecting long lost styles. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, his Buddy Dudes “aka” grandkids, his daughters, family and friends by the backyard pool or on the beach in Maine.
PJ Mercier, Brewery Laborer/CMO
If PJ isn't at the brewery, he is hanging out with his wife and their four children or lost in the woods. He also enjoys skiing, the outdoors, and the pioneer ways of life.
The Navigation Brewing Co. Crew
Our crew is made up of an awesome and helpful group of volunteers that do everything from attend events, assist with production and man the taproom.
